World Soil Day 2025: the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies takes part in the global day dedicated to soil protection
On 5 December, World Soil Day is celebrated, an international observance established by the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly to draw global attention to the importance of a resource that is both essential and fragile. The theme chosen for the 2025 edition – “Healthy Soils for Healthy Cities” – highlights the strategic role of soil in the quality of life in urban areas, underscoring how environmental health, food security, and social well-being are deeply interconnected.
In this context, the Sant’Anna School of Advanced Studies contributes to the observance through its scientific expertise in the fields of crop production, sustainable agriculture, and technologies for managing agro-environmental systems.
On 5 December, Elisa Pellegrino, researcher at the Institute of Crop Production, will speak at the World Soil Day Webinar 2025 organized by MDPI, presenting research focused on the interaction between soil microorganisms and crop nutritional quality. Her contribution, titled “Microbial inoculation and crop biofortification: strategies for improving soil quality and crop nutrition”, will explore microbe-based inoculation and plant biofortification as key strategies to enhance soil fertility and increase the nutritional value of agricultural production, with direct benefits also for urban ecosystems.
